4.  What is the Linksys Smart Gigabit Switch, LGS318P’s IP address?

The switch is acting as a DHCP client by default.  If there is no DHCP server on your network, the default IP address of the switch is 192.168.1.251/255.255.255.0.

5.  What is PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables an Ethernet network cable to deliver both data and power.

6.  What kind of devices can be connected to the switch?

The device’s PoE+ support allows networking device such as hubs, IP phone, IP cameras, computers, routers, switches, and network printers to be connected to it.

7.  What is the advantage of having a switch when it comes to data transfer?

The switch's Gigabit speed ports provide high bandwidth capabilities.  It also acts as a repeater which regenerates data signals as they pass through the device.  This feature acts as a safeguard to deter data loss and ensure that transmissions arrive securely at their destinations.  Moreover, a switch is capable of intelligent filtering of data based on source and destination as compared to the repeater which can only regenerate the signal without checking its recipients.

8.  Can I use a switch to share Internet connection to all computers in the network?

No.  The switch is not capable of sharing Internet connection across the network but it allows more computers to be connected to a local network.

9. Does the LGS318P support QoS?

The Smart Gigabit Switch does not support QoS advance mode, only QoS basic mode.

10. Does the LGS318P support Port Mirroring?

Yes, up to four (4) sources to one (1) target.

11. What are the package contents of the Linksys LGS318P?

LEDs

1.  What do the LEDs in the Smart Gigabit Switch, LGS318P mean?

System LED - Indicates the device’s status and activities.
  • OFF - System is powered OFF.
  • Solid Blue - System is ON and operative.
  • Blinking Blue:
  • Booting/System Self-Test
  • Device is using the factory default IP address of 192.168.1.251
  • Blinking Yellow - Failure detect (e.g. Fan)

PoE MAX - Indicates the PoE power budget status of the switch (for PoE models only).
  • OFF - Total power feeding does not reach 85% of total power budget.
  • Solid Amber - Total power feeding is reaching over 85% of total power budget.

Combo port LED’s
  • Left - Link/Activity
  • OFF - No link detected
  • Solid - Link is detected/established
  • Blinking - Transmitting/receiving Data
  • Right - Speed
  • OFF - 10/100 Base-TX link detected or link down
  • Solid - 1000 M Link detected

RJ-45 Port LEDs
  • Left - Link/Activity
  • OFF - No link detected
  • Solid - Link is detected/established
  • Blinking - Transmitting/receiving Data

NOTE:  For more information about the Smart Gigabit Switch LEDs, click here.

2.  Why do the System LED keep blinking?

The System LED flashes when the device is acquiring an IP address and when currently using the factory default IP address 192.168.1.251.  The system status LED changes to solid blue when a new unique IP address is received from the DHCP server or a static IP address has been set.

3.  When will the PoE MAX LED turn ON?

The PoE MAX LED turns ON when the switch is providing more than 85% of its total PoE budget.  The LED gives the user a warning that only 15% of the total PoE budget is available.
