Blinking Power LED on a Linksys gateway

When the Power LED on your Linksys gateway is blinking, this means that its firmware is corrupted.

To resolve this issue, follow the procedures below:

  1. Checking the Internet connection
  2. Upgrading the Linksys X-Series gateway’s Firmware
  3. Resetting the gateway
  4. Reconfiguring the Linksys X-Series gateway


Checking the Internet connection


Check the computer’s connection to the Internet.  There are two (2) ways to test your computer’s connectivity:

  • Launching a web browser and trying to access a website (i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari).
  • Performing a Ping test.  For instructions on how to perform a Ping test, click here.

After verifying that you have Internet connection, proceed with downloading and upgrading the firmware of the device.  To do these go to Linksys Support Site to download the latest firmware of your gateway.  For detailed instructions on how to do this, click here.

If you’re unable to get online using the Linksys gateway, proceed with resetting the gateway and download and upgrade the firmware afterwards.

Upgrading the Linksys X-Series gateway’s Firmware

Step 1:
Access the gateway’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:

Click on Administration > Firmware Upgrade.

Step 3:
Click on Browse....

Step 4:
Browse to where the firmware files were extracted and select the .bin file, then click Open.

If you’re using a Mac® computer, select the .bin file then click Choose.

Step 5:
Click the Start Upgrade button.

Step 6:
Once the message that says, "Upgrade is successful. Rebooting....." comes up, click  .


IMPORTANT:
  It is recommended to reset and power cycle the gateway after the upgrading process.

Resetting the gateway

Reset the gateway to factory default settings.  Depending on the model of your ADSL gateway, you can find the Reset button on either of the following locations:

  • Back panel of the ADSL gateway

  • Bottom panel of the ADSL gateway

NOTE:  After resetting the gateway, power cycle the device by unplugging the power cord from the back of the gateway and after 30 seconds plug it back in.

Reconfiguring the Linksys X-Series gateway

Step 1:
Connect one (1) end of an Ethernet cable to your computer and the other end to an Ethernet port at the back of the gateway.

Step 2:
Launch a web browser and on the address bar enter the IP “192.168.1.1”, then hit [Enter].

Step 3:
Once the login prompt appears, enter “admin” on both the Username and Password fields then click OK.

Step 4:
On the Setup page and under the Basic Setup sub-tab, go to the Internet Setup section and click on the drop-down arrow and select RFC 2516 PPPoE.

IMPORTANT:  For Australia and New Zealand users, select RFC 2364 PPPoA instead.

QUICK TIP:
  The Internet Connection Type (Encapsulation) may be different in certain areas depending on your Internet Service Provider.  If the connection type that your ISP gave is not available in the drop-down, then this gateway is not compatible to work as a modem-router and can only be used as a router.

Step 5:
Select VC for Multiplexing.

Step 6:
For Virtual Circuit, enter “0” for the VPI range and “35” for the VCI range.

IMPORTANT:  For Australia and New Zealand users, the VPI Range should be set to 0 and the VCI Range to 100.

Step 7:
Select MultiMode from the DSL Modulation drop-down menu then enter your User Name and Password.

NOTE:  The username and the password can be obtained from your ISP.

Step 8:
Select Auto for the MTU.

NOTE:
  Confirm with your ISP if your gateway’s MTU is Auto.  If not, choose Manual from the drop-down box and enter the correct value as provided by your ISP.

Step 9:
Click Save Settings.
