Establishing Client to Gateway IPsec Tunnel with Shrewsoft VPN Client

Linksys Gigabit VPN routers have a Client to Gateway VPN tunnel feature with some popular VPN client software such as Greenbow, Safenet, Shrewsoft and IPSecuritas.  This article will show you how to establish the Client to Gateway VPN tunnel using Shrewsoft.
 
Before configuring your VPN client software make sure that the Linksys Gigabit VPN router is configure for Client to Gateway IPsec Tunnel for instructions, click here.
 
Step1:
Download and install Shrewsoft VPN client software on your Windows or Linux computer.  To download, click here.
 
Step 2:
Open Shrewsoft VPN client and click Add.
 
 
Step 3:
Click the General tab, enter the Host Name or IP Address under Remote Host.  Select disabled under Auto Configuration.  Then set the Adapter Mode to Use an existing adapter and current address under Local Host.
 
NOTE:  In this example we used these values.
 
Host Name or IP Address:  192.168.111.111 (remote WAN IP address)
Auto Configuration:  Disable
Adapter Mode:  Use an existing adapter and current address
 
 
Step 4:
If the VPN client is not behind a NAT, click the Client tab then select disable for the NAT Traversal option. 
 
 
Step 5:
Click the Name Resolution tab; uncheck the Enable DNS box both in the DNS and WINS tab.
 
 
Step 6:
Click the Authentication tab, select Mutual PSK under Authentication Method.  Set Identification Type as IP Address then enter client computer’s IP address in the Address String under Local Identity tab.
 
NOTE:  In this example the client computer’s IP address is 192.168.111.222.
 
 
Step 7:
Select IP address for the Identification Type then enter the remote WAN IP address in the Address String under Remote Identity tab.
 
NOTE:  In this example the remote WAN IP address is 192.168.111.111.
 
 
Step 8:
Click Credentials then enter the Pre Shared Key.
 
 
Step 9:
Click the Phase 1 tab and apply the same settings from the Phase 1 of the Linksys Gigabit VPN router.
 
 
Step 10:
Click the Phase 2 tab and apply the same settings from the Phase 2 of the Linksys Gigabit VPN router.
 
 
Step 11:
Click the Policy tab, select require for the Policy Generation Level.  Then, check Maintain Persistent Security Associations box.
 
 
Step 12:
Click Add then the Topology Entry dialogue box will appear.  Select Include for the Type and enter the Address/Netmask of the Linksys Gigabit VPN router.  Click Ok.
 
NOTE:  In this example the LAN subnet is 192.168.1.0/24.
 
 
Step 13:
Click Save.
 
 
Step 14:
Click the Connect icon on the VPN Access Manager.
 
 
Step 15:
On the VPN connect dialog window, click the Connect button to establish connection.
 
 
To verify the connectivity between the computer using Shrewsoft and the network:
  • Check if the Client to Gateway VPN Tunnel is connected between Linksys Gigabit VPN router and computer successfully.
  • Check if the computer can Ping the Local Default gateway of the Linksys Gigabit VPN router.
  • Check if both computers connected to the VPN tunnel can ping each other.
  • Check if both computers connected to the VPN tunnel can telnet.
  • Check if both computers connected to the VPN tunnel can access each other’s HTTP server and FTP server
