OpenVPN Setting Description for Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers

OpenVPN is a feature of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers (WRT3200ACM, WRT1900AC, WRT1900ACS, and WRT1200AC) that enables the customer to give access to their home network using the OpenVPN client.  It adds a simple server and easy client setup experience for a home router with Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution and an added security without a lot of technical settings.

Allow remote access to this page

To allow remote access to the OpenVPN feature via the cloud you need to check this box.  This option is turned off by default, meaning that if you log in via www.linksysmartwifi.com you will not see the OpenVPN widget.  You will need to log in locally to allow this using the router’s LAN IP address (example: http://192.168.1.1).
Server Address

IP Address x.x.x.x - This is the WAN IP address of the router and this would populate if your router is online.  You can change the Port, Protocol, and IP Address Range subnet if needed.

Existing DNS name - Enter your DNS name.  If you have a dynamic WAN IP address this is the preferred method to avoid connection failures due to every time your Internet Service Provider (ISP) changes your WAN IP address.  Then, change the Port, Protocol, and IP Address Range subnet if needed.

QUICK TIP:  Your DNS server name can be up to 255 characters and must be a valid host name as defined in RFC 952 and RFC 1123, section 2.1:
  • Each separate label within the host name (delimited by '.') must be between 1 and 63 characters
  • Valid characters are: [a-z], [A-Z], [0-9], '-'
  • First character must be a letter or a number
  • The last character must not be a '-'

Clicking this button downloads the OpenVPN profile needed to send to users who will connect to your home network using OpenVPN feature.  After you have completed configuring the OpenVPN feature of the router, click to download the profile with the current OpenVPN settings.
  • Send an email to individual users with their username and password you have created along with the attachment of the OpenVPN profile.
  • If you as the admin need to use OpenVPN feature as well, you must create a username and password for yourself as well.
  • You can only download a profile locally & via the cloud as long as the “Allow remote access to this page” feature is checked.
  • If your ISP changed your WAN IP address (typical if you have a dynamic WAN IP address) or the admin changed the router’s LAN IP address, service port, or protocol, you will have to send a new OpenVPN profile to the users.  The previous profile for the users will not work.  There will be a message reminder to make sure to download and distribute the new profile to the users.
NOTE:  Safari® and older versions of web browsers do not support remote download of profiles, make sure to use the latest versions.
