Setting up your Linksys range extender in Access Point mode

The latest Linksys Range Extenders can be configured to work in Access Point mode.  This article will show you the steps on how you can set it up as an Access Point.

These are the Linksys range extenders you can set up in Access Point mode:
  • Linksys RE7000 Max-Stream™ AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender
  • Linksys RE6800 AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender

  • Linksys RE6400 AC1200 BOOST EX Wi-Fi Range Extender
  • Linksys RE6300 AC750 BOOST Wi-Fi Range Extender
Before you start the setup process, ensure the following:
  1. An active Wi-Fi connection.
  2. Your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password / security key.

QUICK TIP:  The Wi-Fi name and password are from your existing Wi-Fi settings and are case-sensitive.  For instructions on how to check your Wi-Fi settings, click here.

  3. An ethernet cable long enough to connect your router to your range extender.
Once you're ready, follow the steps below.

Step 1:
Plug your range extender into a power outlet.
Wait until the light starts blinking orange.

Step 2:
Connect an ethernet cable from the router to your range extender and wait until the LED turns green.

Step 3:
Connect a wireless computer or a mobile device to the
range extender's default SSID, which is Linksys Extender Setup – xxx.

NOTE:  The xxx represents the last three characters of your range extender's MAC address, which can be found at the back label of the device.

Step 4:
Open a web browser, then enter "http://extender.linksys.com" in the Address bar.

Step 5:

NOTE:  If you haven’t connected an ethernet cable from your range extender to your router or switch, it will prompt you to connect the cable and try again. Ensure that it is properly plugged in before proceeding to the next step.

Step 7:
Create the extended network that the range extender will be broadcasting, then click Next.

QUICK TIP:  The extended network is the Wi-Fi that your range extender will broadcast for nearby clients to connect to.

NOTE:  If you want to set up Wi-Fi using Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), you'll need to set up your device manually as the security mode setup only has WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode and WPA2 (recommended) as its options.  To manually set up your range extender, repeat from Step 1 up to Step 4, then choose Manual Setup.

Step 8:
Create an admin password to secure your range extender, then click Save.  You may also add a password hint.
