Encountering difficulties getting online when connected to the Linksys X-series Gateway

If you are having difficulty getting online when connected to the Linksys X-series Gateway, this may be caused by any of the following:

A proper connection to the gateway is not established

Incorrect IP address

To resolve this, perform the following:

Powercycle the gateway and the computer

Power OFF the computer and the gateway for 10 seconds then switch them back ON in the following order:

Gateway
Your computer

When powering ON the gateway, the power light will flash for a few seconds as the gateway goes through its self-diagnostic mode. When the gateway is ready, the power light will be solid green.

After making sure that the gateway is ready, restart your computer.

If this still doesn’t resolve the issue, you may proceed to check your network’s physical connections.

If you’re using the Linksys X-series Gateway as a router-only:

For wired connections: Have two ethernet cables. The first cable should be connected from the modem to the Linksys X-series Gateway’s cable port and the second cable should be from the computer to any of the ethernet ports at the back of the Linksys X-series Gateway.

For WiFi connections:  Make sure that the ethernet cables for the modem and Linksys X-series Gateway are properly connected and that your computer is successfully connected to your WiFi.

If this still doesn’t work, disconnect the Linksys X-series Gateway and connect your computer directly to the modem. You should have internet connectivity using this setup. If not, contact your ISP. There might be a problem with the internet connection from your ISP.

If you’re using the Linksys X-series Gateway as a modem router:

For wired connections: Have an extra ethernet cable. There might be a possibility that the ethernet cable that is currently connecting your computer and the Linksys X-series Gateway is defective. Connect the computer to the gateway’s DSL port using the extra ethernet cable and make sure that the WAN light is lit.

For WiFi connections: Make sure that the phone jack is properly connected to the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) or microfilter and Linksys X-series Gateway. Also, ensure that your computer is successfully connected to your WiFi.

If this still doesn’t work, contact your ISP as there might be a problem with the internet connection from your ISP.

You may check the lights of your gateway by doing the following:

If there is a computer that is connected to one of the ethernet ports at the back of the Linksys X-series Gateway, the corresponding ethernet light at the front should also be lit.

Make sure that the WAN light is lit. It will light up white when the gateway is connected to the ADSL through the DSL port. It will light up blue when the gateway is set up as a router-only and is connected to a separate modem.

Make sure that the power light is continuously lit and not blinking.

Check the computer’s IP address

Checking the computer’s IP address is another way to determine if the computer is getting a valid IP address from the Linksys X-series Gateway.

If your computer has a Static IP address, set it to obtain an IP address automatically.

A ping test helps trace the communication between the computer and the gateway. The computer sends packets to the gateway and in return, the gateway sends out replies to validate the connection. If you’re using a Mac® computer, follow these steps.

Make sure to get four replies, Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss).

After making sure that your computer is properly communicating with the Linksys X-series Gateway, it is important to check whether the gateway is able to connect through the internet. Follow the steps below:

1. Access the gateway’s web interface.

2. Click on the Status tab.

3. Under Internet Connection, make sure that you have a valid Internet IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers.

If you’re not getting any valid Internet IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS, this means that your Linksys X-series Gateway is still not yet configured with your ISP’s settings. Contact your ISP to get the necessary settings to configure your gateway.

After making sure your Linksys X-series Gateway is getting a proper connection to the ADSL or modem, check if your computer is getting the proper connection to the internet as well.

After doing all the steps above and you’re still unable to access the internet, make sure that the internet browser’s proxy settings are disabled.

If all the steps above did not resolve the issue, try to disable any security software on your computer.
