How to add a wired child node to a Linksys Velop Cognitive Mesh WiFi system using the Linksys app

The Linksys Cognitive Mesh nodes can be connected with ethernet cables. Wiring nodes together can increase the range and speed of your network and reduce the risk of wireless interference.

You will still have to set up the additional nodes wirelessly using the Linksys app; once this is done, connect the nodes using CAT5e or higher-rated ethernet cables and the nodes should automatically switch to a wired connection.


Before you begin:

 
  • Parent node - The parent node is the Linksys Velop Cognitive Mesh node/router that will be connected to your modem or internet source.
  • Child node - The child node is an additional Linksys Velop Cognitive Mesh node/router that you can add to extend your WiFi network.
    • Linksys Velop Cognitive Mesh products are not backward compatible with Linksys Velop Intelligent Mesh products.
    • Here is a list of child nodes that you can add.
  


Directions

1. Set up the parent node using the Linksys app (if it is not yet set up).

2. If the child node isn’t connected wirelessly to your network, you will need to
add the child node using the Linksys app.

3. Once the child node has been added to the mesh system, move the child node to your desired location then connect it to a power outlet.

4. Connect an ethernet cable to the child node and connect the other end of the cable to the parent node. You can connect either from the WAN or LAN port of the child node to the LAN port of the parent node. The nodes will automatically switch to a wired connection.

5. If you have other nodes to add, repeat steps 2 and 3. Then, connect the additional child node to an upstream node instead of connecting it to the parent node.

You have now set up a wired mesh system. Keep in mind that the nodes do not provide power over ethernet (non-PoE). They need to be plugged into a power source.
