How MAC randomization affects the way Linksys sees my devices

Linksys uses a consistent MAC address to identify and communicate with your devices.

iOS 14 and Android™ 10 have a security feature that changes the MAC addresses of your wireless devices when they connect to the Wi-Fi. This means that any rules you set for your devices that are connected to the Linksys network will not work if their MAC addresses change, which would primarily affect any devices under Parental Controls.

The good news is that you can choose to turn it OFF on your devices that you will connect to the Linksys network ONLY while keeping it ON for all other networks so that your devices continue to stay private. Alternately, you can leave it ON for the devices on your Linksys network, but you will have to identify the devices again and apply the same Parental Controls rules to them.

Whatever you decide to do about this feature, Linksys will never suggest that you do anything to compromise your privacy and security. Remember to always keep the firmware updated on all connected devices, use safe and unique passwords, and exercise all other necessary security precautions.

Disabling the private or random MAC address on your device

Keeping MAC randomization ON while using Linksys Shield

If you want to keep Linksys Shield working with the MAC randomization feature ON for your network, you’ll need to identify your devices and apply the settings again.

Step 1:
Open your Linksys app and log in with your email address. Then, go to Linksys Shield.

Step 2:
Tap Add a device.

Step 3:
Identify the relevant device with its new MAC address. Most likely, this will have the same name as the old device and will be in the online section.

Step 4:
Add the device and apply the desired settings and schedules.

Step 5:
Tap Save.

You will still have duplicate versions of your device (original MAC address) in the offline section of Parental Controls. You can leave them there or delete any Parental Controls rules and remove them from the list.
