Getting to know the ports and lights on the Linksys Smart Gigabit switch

The lights on the Linksys PoE+ smart switch (LGS326MP, LGS326P, LGS308MP, LGS308P, and LGS318P) and Linksys Smart Gigabit Switch (LGS326, LGS308, and LGS318) indicate the device’s status and port activities.

The Linksys LGS308, LGS308P, and LGS308P do not have combo ports.

Ports
  • RJ45 ports - the ports connect your devices to the switch through ethernet cables.
  • Combo ports - are single-logical ports that support either RJ45 cables or and SFP modules.
    • RJ45 - Auto-sensing ethernet network ports detect the speed of the device connected to it (10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps) and adjust port speed and duplex accordingly. 
    • SFP - A connection point for an SFP (miniGBIC) expansion module that allows for the switch to be uplinked via fiber to another switch.  The SFP port provides a link to a high-speed network segment or individual workstation at speeds of 1000 Mbps.  To establish a gigabit ethernet connection using an SFP port, you will need to install a 1 GB SFP module and use fiber optic cabling. 
NOTES: 
  • Only ONE of the two physical connections may be used at a time.  The system will automatically detect the media that is in use on a combo port.
  • If both RJ45 and SFP are present (link up in both connections), the SFP will be active and the RJ45 connection will be disabled and ignored.  The RJ45 connection will be on standby and automatically enabled if the SFP link goes down.
  • The SFP and RJ45 interfaces share a common link/activity and speed status lights.
  • Some port controls are affected by the actual physical connection used.
  • The SFP interface supports both gigabit and 100 Mbps speeds.
