Installing and configuring the Plex Media Server on your Mac® computer

The Plex Media Server allows you to organize your digital media files such as video files, music files and image files as well as allow you to stream or view your media content on other Plex clients such as your mobile phones, tablets, game consoles, set top boxes and wireless televisions.Ā 

Why download a Plex Media Server?
Ā 
In order for you to view or stream your digital media files on your Plex application on your mobile devices, game consoles, or wireless televisions, you need to have a Plex Media Server installed and running on your computer.Ā  The Plex Media Server is automatically detected by your Plex client once it is running and connected to the same network.Ā

NOTE: Ā The Plex Media Server for MacĀ® computers requires Mac OS XĀ® 10.6 or higher version.Ā

Downloading Plex Media Server on your MacĀ® computer
Ā 
Follow the instructions below to learn how to download Plex Media Server.

Step 1:
Launch a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox and enter www.plexapp.comĀ in the address bar.Ā  Press Enter.
Ā 
Step 2:
Click the Plex on your Desktop link.
Ā 
Ā 
Step 3:
Select theĀ Mac OS X option.
Ā 
Ā Ā 
Step 4:
Click the Download for MAC OS X button to download the .dmg file.Ā 
Ā 
Ā 
The Plex Media Server application will begin downloading.
Ā 
Launching Plex Media Server on your MacĀ® computer
Ā 
The Plex Media Server application no longer requires installation.Ā To learn how to run the application, follow the instructions below:

Step 1:
Locate and double-click the Plex Media Server .dmg file.
Ā 
Ā 
Step 2:
Double-click the Plex Media Server icon.
Ā 
Ā 
Step 3:
You will be prompted that the Plex Media Server is an application downloaded from the Internet.Ā  Click Open to launch the Plex Media Server application.Ā

Ā 
The Plex Media Server application will launch on your computerā€™s default web browser.Ā 
Ā 
Initial configuration of the Plex Media Server
Ā 
Step 1:
On the Get Started page, click Start.

Ā 
Step 2:
EnterĀ your preferredĀ Friendly Name for your computer, then click Next.
Ā 
Ā 
NOTE:Ā  If you would like to send feedback about the Plex Media Server, tick the Send feedback checkbox.
Ā

If you would also like to receive announcements and updates about Plex, enter your email address in the Email field.Ā Ā

Step 3:
Click on the Add a Section to add another file category type to your media library.
Ā 
Ā 
Ā 
NOTE:Ā  You can skip this test by clicking Next.Ā 
Ā 
Step 4:
Select the media type that you want to add.
Ā 
Ā 
Step 5:
Click Add a Folder.
Ā 
Ā 
Step 6:
Search for the folder that you want to add to your Plex Media Server.Ā

Ā 
Step 7:
Once you have found the folder thatĀ you want to add, select the folder and click Add Folder.

Step 8:
Click Add Section to finalize.
Ā

Step 9:
Select the channels you want to install on your Plex Media Server then click Next.

NOTE:Ā  You can skip this step if you do not want to add a channel on your Plex Media Server by clicking Skip or Next.

Step 10:
Create an account with MyPlex to allow you to access your digital media files anytime and anywhere.Ā  Enter your preferred account details and click Next to create your account.Ā

If you already have an account, click on the Already have an account? link and sign in to your account.Ā Ā Ā

NOTE: Ā If you do not want to create an account, click the Skip link at the top of the page to go directly to the home page of your Plex Media Server.Ā

Click Done to go to your Plex Media Server home screen.Ā

Your Plex Media Server has been configured.Ā  You are now redirected to the home page.Ā

View your media files on your Plex clients

Now that you have your Plex Media Server installed and ready to go, you can now enjoy your favorite movies, music and photos right on your Plex clients such as your iOS devices.Ā
