Creating an IPSec Group VPN Tunnel on a Linksys Gigabit VPN Router

A Group VPN Tunnel allows a group of users to connect to a single VPN Tunnel simultaneously.  It is recommended to use this option when your remote computers are behind a router or NAT Firewall.

NOTE:  To accomplish this setup, your VPN router must be on a different LAN IP address than the remote routers (similar to the illustration below).

Creating a Client To Gateway Group VPN

NOTE:  
The Linksys LRT224 Dual WAN Business Gigabit VPN Router is used as an example below.  Images and steps may vary depending on the model of your Linksys Gigabit VPN Router.

 
Step 1:
Using a computer connected to your router, access the router’s web interface.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
Click on Configuration.

Step 3:
Click on VPN then click on Client To Gateway.

Step 4:
Select Group VPN, create your Tunnel Name and identify an Interface (if you have multiple WAN setup).

NOTES:  
  • If you have a dual WAN setup, select the appropriate WAN interface where the remote client should come through.
  • The Enable box is checked by default. 

Step 5:
Configure the LOCAL GROUP SETUP by selecting your Local Security Group Type and by entering your IP Address and your Subnet Mask in the fields provided.

Step 6:
Configure the REMOTE CLIENT SETUP.  Select Domain Name(FQDN) as your Remote Client and type your preferred Domain Name.  You can also use Email Address(USER FQDN) and input your preferred Email Address. 

NOTE:  Any domain name or email address will work on this setup.

Step 7:
Configure the IPSEC SETUP.  Create your own Preshared Key.

NOTE:  If you don't want the router to check the complexity of your key, uncheck Minimum Preshared Key Complexity.

Step 8:
Click on the Advanced + button at the bottom and select the following options:
  • Aggressive Mode
  • Keep-Alive
  • NAT Traversal

Step 9:
Click on Save.
 
Step 10:
You will be prompted to select either OK or Cancel.  Click OK if you want to add another Group VPN.  If you click on Cancel, the screen will return to the VPN Summary page.
