Positioning the external antennas on the Linksys EA9400 and EA9500 routers

The Linksys EA9500 and EA9400 routers deliver innovative Beamforming technology on both bands.  Beamforming enables the router to identify and connect directly with other devices rather than simply sending out wireless signals in a general direction.  Now you can experience faster network speeds, better wireless range, reduced interference from other devices, and stronger Wi-Fi connections.

The Linksys EA9500 and EA9400 comes with eight non-detachable and adjustable antennas described as follows:

  • Four dual-band antennas (2.4 and 5 GHz)
  • Four single-band antennas (5 GHz)
  • 160 mm height (excluding hinge)

NOTE: The sample image above assumes that you are standing in front of the router.

All the external antennas are adjustable to different positions depending on your preference and environment.

  • For best performance, position antennas vertically at a 90-degree angle.
  • Each antenna radiates their signal as shown above (parallel to the same floor).

However, to optimize your antennas’ maximum signal, the following positions are recommended:

  • Single-Story Homes:
For single-story homes, all the antennas should be straight up.

  • Multi-Story Homes:
For multi-story homes, the four antennas must be straight up and the other four need to be adjusted based on where you need the coverage and where you want the signal to radiate. See scenario below to determine which antennas to adjust.

Example Scenario:

Let’s assume that you are facing the front panel of the router. Note that the left four antennas are dual-band antennas and the right four are 5 GHz-only antennas. Pick two dual-band and two of the 5 GHz-only antennas and adjust them in multi-story home scenario, the rest keep them straight up.
