How to verify if the VPN Passthrough feature is enabled on a Linksys Wireless-N router

A VPN Passthrough is a way to connect two secured networks over the Internet.  This article will guide you on how to set up a VPN Passthrough on a Linksys Wireless-N router.

QUICK TIP:  Linksys Wireless-N routers are only capable of enabling the VPN traffic to pass through the device.  You will need a VPN router and software to create the actual network to connect with your VPN client.

The VPN Passthrough feature is enabled on Linksys routers by default.  To verify that VPN Passthrough is enabled, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the router's web-based setup page.

Step 2:
On the router's web-based setup page, select the Security tab, then select the VPN Passthrough sub-tab.

Step 3:
To establish VPN connections, make sure that the following protocol settings are set to Enabled:

  • IPSec Passthrough
  • PPTP Passthrough
  • L2TP Passthrough

NOTE:  If any of the protocols is disabled, make sure to click Enabled then click Save Settings.

Once all three (3) VPN protocols are enabled, contact your VPN Software developer to configure the software behind a router.

QUICK TIP:  You may use any third party port scanner application to make sure that the following ports are open on the remote VPN router:

 VPN Protocols Port Numbers
Port Forwarding / (IPSec)50, 21 / (500)
PPTP1723
L2TP1701
