OpenVPN is a feature of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers (WRT3200ACM, WRT1900AC, WRT1900ACS, and WRT1200AC) that enables the customer to give access to their home network using the OpenVPN client.  It adds a simple server and easy client setup experience for a home router with Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution and an added security without a lot of technical settings.  For instructions on how to configure this feature in your router, click here.

5. What happens to the OpenVPN feature when my Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router is in Bridge Mode?

The OpenVPN feature is disabled in the router if it is set to Bridge Mode.

6. How do I prevent an existing user from connecting to my OpenVPN network?

If you wish to remove a user from the list of OpenVPN Users, click Edit then click the X button beside the user’s profile to delete it from the list.

7. How many user profiles can I create?

You can create up to 25 user profiles for your network; however, you can only have up to five (5) remote connections to the router.  When the maximum number is reached, you will see a Max number of users reached message.

8. What do I do if I don’t see the OpenVPN feature on my Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router?

If you don’t see the OpenVPN feature on the web-based setup page of your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers (WRT3200ACM, WRT1900AC, WRT1900ACS, and WRT1200AC), do the following:

Step 1:
Make sure your router has the latest firmware version.

Step 2:
If you are logged in via linksyssmartwifi.com, you will need to log in locally.  For example, go to https://192.168.1.1 and click on Local Access > OpenVPN > Edit.  Check the Allow remote access to this feature box then click Save.

9. What do I do if the remote users can no longer connect using the OpenVPN?

First check if you made changes to the router (LAN IP Address, WAN IP Address, Port number or Protocol).  If any of these settings will change, you will need to send a new OpenVPN profile to the users.  You can double check if the user is using the correct username and password that was provided.

10. What do I do if I can't see the other computers and shares that were connected to my network after configuring OpenVPN?

In these cases, split-tunneling needs to be enabled but should only be used on private networks.  For security reasons, it is not recommended to use split-tunneling on public networks.
