Cascading (Connecting) a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router

Cascading is a term used in connecting a router to another router or a modem/router.  This type of configuration is recommended if you want to:
  • Improve the performance of the network without removing your older router
  • Connect more devices (wired and wireless)
  • Expand the wireless network range
  • Isolate the network traffic
A Linksys router’s default IP address is usually set to 192.168.1.1.  If there are two routers connected, they will have a conflict in their IP addresses which would lead to intermittent or no Internet connection.  Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers have the capability of detecting and resolving this IP address conflict.

Cascading your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router to an existing router is simple and easy because you don’t have to manually configure the settings.  The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router will detect that it is cascaded and will configure settings automatically for the connection to work.

NOTE:  Before connecting your Linksys router, make sure you have an active Internet connection with your Primary router.  The Primary router can be an existing router on your network or a modem/router given by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).  If you do not have an active Internet connection on the Primary router, contact your ISP or the router manufacturer.

QUICK TIP:  If you have manually changed the IP address of your Linksys router, it will perform its auto detect and automatically change the IP address to the 10.X.X.X network once it has been reset.

Expanding your network

Your router has the capability to connect multiple devices in the network such as smartphones, tablets, game consoles and printers.  If you have a large house with devices that require top wireless speeds and a wide range, you can also extend the range of your wireless network by using other networking devices from Linksys like the Powerline adapters.
