Setting up DDNS service on a Linksys router

The Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) service lets you assign a fixed domain name to a dynamic Internet IP address.  This is very useful if you are hosting your own website or if you have a server set up behind your router.

DDNS is a good fit for home networks since majority of users have a default DHCP setup that refreshes their IP address.  This makes your network inaccessible by users outside your network since they do not know what the IP address is at any given time.

Below are the steps on how to set up a DDNS service on your Linksys Router.

NOTE:  To use the DDNS feature of your router, begin by signing up with a DDNS provider.  Do note, however, that these DNS providers are premium services that require subscription.  Linksys routers only support DynDNS and TZO DDNS service providers.

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.  For Mac®  users, click here.

Step 2:
Select DDNS.

Step 3:
Click the DDNS Service drop-down menu and select the DDNS service provider you have signed up to.

Step 4:
Enter your DDNS service account details in the specified fields.

For the DynDNS account:

Fill out the following fields:

• Username – Enter your DynDNS username.
• Password – Enter your DynDNS account password.
• Host Name – Enter the host name you used for your DynDNS account.
• Mail Exchange - Enter the address of your mail exchange server, so emails from your DynDNS address go to your mail server.

Select the following options:

• System – Select the DynDNS service that you’re using.  The default is Dynamic.
• Backup MX – This option allows the Mail Excange (MX) to be a backup.  The default option is Disabled.
• Wildcard – This option lets you use wildcards for your DDNS address host.  The default option is Disabled.

The Internet IP Address displays your router’s IP address.  If you have set it to Dynamic, your router’s IP address will change periodically.

For the TZO account:

Fill out the following fields:

• Email Address – Enter the email address you used for your TZO account.
• TZO Password – Enter your TZO account password.
• Domain Name – Enter the domain name you selected for your TZO account.

The Internet IP Address displays your router’s IP address.  If your router is set to Dynamic, your router’s IP address will change periodically.

The Status field will display your connection status.

Step 5:
Click Update to apply the changes.

Step 6:
Click .

NOTE:  To check the public IP address of your router, click the Status tab of the router's web-based setup page and take note of the DNS1, DNS2 and/or DNS3.  These are the DNS server addresses that the router is getting from the modem.
