What are motion devices?

Motion devices can detect motion in your home.  Linksys Aware-compatible nodes and Velop plugins on your mesh WiFi system are motion devices, as are any compatible smart home devices you decide to include in your network.  For a list of smart home devices that are compatible with Linksys Aware, click here.

Why should I add more motion devices?

The more devices you have, the better an idea you'll have of where motion is happening in your home.

Some helpful tips for selecting devices include:

  • Only choose devices where you care about detecting motion, and don’t choose too many.  Make sure each device is at least 16 ft from another motion device on your system to prevent overlap and interference.
  • Choose devices that aren’t hidden behind obstacles.  Limit the number of walls between them and don’t put them behind a TV or in a closet.
  • Choose devices that are centrally located in a room and not next to walls shared with neighbors.
  • Don't choose devices that are battery-operated.

How do I add more motion devices to my system?

To add compatible smart home devices, tap the Manage Devices icon on the Live view screen then tap Add smart home devices.  We'll show you how the system works and check for compatible devices.  We'll also give you tips on which devices to select.

If you add nodes to your WiFi, you don’t have to do anything.  They will automatically be added to Linksys Aware.

Do you have smart home devices not on this list?  The app will let you know if they will work with Linksys Aware.

Why isn’t my compatible device on the list?

It may not be connected to a compatible node.  For a list of compatible nodes, click here.  Only smart home devices connected to a Linksys Aware-compatible mesh router with the latest firmware can be used.

Why does it say my device is offline?

It could be that the device is turned OFF or no longer connected to the WiFi.  Check your device.  If it’s turned OFF, turn it back ON.  If it was already turned ON, unplug it and plug it back in.  You can confirm that your device has successfully connected to the WiFi if it is listed on the Devices screen of the Linksys app.

Why does it say that my smart home device has connected to an incompatible node?

When you added your smart home device to Linksys Aware, this means that it was connected to a compatible node.  Since then, it has changed connection to an incompatible node.  For a list of compatible nodes, click here.  Changing connections is common in mesh networks when WiFi devices try to get a better connection or if the node a device is connected to goes offline.

Here are some things you can do if you find yourself in this situation:

  • Make sure all your nodes have the latest firmware.
  • Turn OFF any incompatible nodes to force your device to connect to a compatible mesh router/node.  For a list of compatible nodes, click here.
  • If that doesn’t work, you may have to remove the device that is no longer working with Linksys Aware and select another that is connected to a compatible mesh router/node.

I don’t recognize the devices listed for selection

Manufacturers give us default device names.  Some are not the most obvious.

To identify unknown devices, you can try adding devices and then walk past them to see how motion registers.  Another trick is to turn OFF devices and refresh the list.  If a device disappears, you’ll know what it is.

Once you have identified your devices, feel free to edit your device names and icons on the Devices screen.  You can also view identifying information, such as the manufacturer, MAC address or IP address.
