Fast and easy
I had bought a competitors router - my bad after years of using Linksys products - that forced setup on a downloaded mobile app and required registration. Back it went.
Ordered the Linksys and ten minutes after I got it, it was up and running. Setup is straightforward through a web interface and required very little work on my part. It found my router and created its own subnet after acquiring it's IP. Asked me for WiFi network names and passwords, and it was up and running. What's more, further customization can be done easily through the web admin page.
Devices that always struggled with bandwidth and speed through the built-in WiFi on my internet router, now have all the speed they need. Streaming 4k now without issue.

Lynksys is the best
My first Lynksys lasted 15 years. So of course I chose to stay with the best customer service was fantastic with all my questions. I’m tech illiterate.

I would recommend linksys routers to friends. They are reasonably priced, very reliable and provide good wifi speed.

Do I need a modem for this
Yes. Your internet service provider may provide a modem, usually for a monthly fee. Sometimes you may purchase a compatible modem from an electronics retailer. A combination modem/router device may also be available.

What would compare to the WRT54G router I have?
Not sure the number of users or coverage area you need but suggest the lowest cost replacement is probably
a NETGEAR - AC1200 WiFi Router, 1.2Gbps (R6120) at retailers for under $50.
