Setting-up a Linksys Router with a Telstra Cable

Telstra Corporation (formed from Telecom Australia) is an Australian telecommunications company under joint public/private ownership. It has a dominant position in landline telephone services, mobile phone services, domestic consumer (including dial-up access, broadband Internet, broadband cable modem, satellite and ADSL services under the BigPond brand), business data services, and cable television.

To setup a Linksys router using a Telstra Cable ISP you need to perform the following steps:

  1. Verifying Internet Connection
  2. Connecting the Devices Together
  3. Checking the LEDs
  4. Configuring a Linksys Router Using a Telstra Cable
  5. Power Cycle

Verifying Internet Connection                                                         

Connect the Telstra Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure the Internet connection is active.  If not, contact your Internet Service Provider. After verifying the internet connection, connect the devices together. For instructions, follow the instructions below.

Connecting the Devices Together      

After ensuring that you have an active Internet connection, connect the modem to the router’s Internet port and the computer to any of the four Ethernet ports. For instructions, click here. After connecting Telstra’s modem and PC to the router, check the LEDs of the router. For instructions, follow the instructions below.

Checking the LEDs

Check the lights on the front panel of the router. For instructions, click here. After checking the lights configure the router using Telstra Cable settings. For instructions, follow the instruction below.

Configuring a Linksys Router Using a Telstra Cable

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
When the router’s web-based setup page appears, look for Internet Connection Type and select Telstra Cable on the drop-down arrow.

Step 3:
Enter the username and password that Telstra provided you in the User name and Password fields, including the domain in the username if necessary such as username@bigpond.net.au.

NOTE: If Telstra Cable provided you a Heart Beat Server address, enter it in the Heart Beat Server field.

Step 4:

Click  and perform a power cycle. For instructions, please follow the steps below.

Power Cycle

Step 1:
Shut down the computer.

Step 2:
Unplug the router’s power cable.

Step 3:
Unplug Telstra’s broadband modem power cable and wait for 30 seconds.

Plug in Telstra’s broadband modem power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable.

Step 5:
Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable.

Step 6:
Power on the computer and test the Internet connection.
