Setting up the Linksys RE6500 and RE6500HG to Range Extender mode

This article will guide you on how to set up your Linksys RE6500 AC1200 Dual-Band WiFi Extender or Linksys RE6500HG AC1200 Dual-Band WiFi Extender using the setup wizard.  For setup instructions using Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS), click on the link below:

Before setting up your range extender, make sure to have your Wi-Fi settings (Wi-Fi name / SSID and password / security key) ready.  To know how to check the Wi-Fi settings of your router, click here.

NOTE:  The images below may vary depending on the firmware version of your range extender.  To update the firmware of the Linksys RE6500 / RE6500HG, click
here for instructions.

Step 1:
Place the range extender midway between your router and the area without Wi-Fi.  Be sure you have at least 50% Wi-Fi signal from your router.

Step 2:
Connect the antennas to the range extender and its power adapter to a power outlet.  Antennas should be positioned upright for best results.  You can also use the high gain (HG) antennas if you have them (Linksys RE6500HG).

Step 3:
Wait for the light on the top panel of the range extender to blink orange.  It could take up to minutes.
 
Step 4:
Select a method for setting up your range extender:
  • Wireless setup – Using a computer or mobile device, connect to the range extender’s default Wi-Fi name, Linksys Extender Setup – xxx, where xxx are the last three characters of the range extender’s MAC address.  
NOTE:  If you can't see your range extender from the list of available Wi-Fi, you may have to get closer to the range extender.  If the Wi-Fi is still not detected, reset your range extender by pressing the Reset button for 5 seconds or until the light starts to blink white.  Then, wait for the light to blink orange before you start setting up.
  • Wired setup – Connect your range extender to your computer using an ethernet cable.  Make sure your computer is NOT connected to a Wi-Fi.

Step 5:
On your computer or mobile device, launch a browser and enter “http://extender.linksys.com” or the range extender's IP address in the Address bar to access the setup wizard.  

QUICK TIP:  The default IP address of the range extender is 192.168.1.1.  However, once it is connected to a DHCP server such as a router, it will obtain a different IP address from the router.  To check the range extender's IP address in your router’s DHCP table, click

Click on Start.

Step 7:
Select the As a wireless range extender option and click Next.
 
Step 8:
Select your Wi-Fi when prompted.  If you have a dual-band network, you should see the Wi-Fi name of both bands.  Click the Refresh icon to rescan.

NOTE:  If you have a hidden Wi-Fi name, scroll to the bottom and click Manually Enter Network Name and Password.  Otherwise, wait until it detects your Wi-Fi and select your network.

Step 9:
Enter your Wi-Fi password and then click Next to connect to your existing Wi-Fi.

NOTE:  WPA™ keys are case sensitive.  WEP keys are hexadecimal (0-9 and a-f) characters and are not case sensitive.

Step 10:
You will be prompted to configure your Extended Network.  The Extended Network names are automatically appended with an _Ext suffix (for 2.4 GHz) and _5GHz_Ext (for 5 GHz).  You can change the names of your Extended Networks then click Next when finished.  


Step 11:
Spot Finder will then determine if the signal strength between your range extender and your router is Just right.  If your range extender is Too close or Too far, move it to a better location and go back to Step 3.  Click Next once you're done.
 
NOTE:  The Spot Finder feature is available with the firmware version 1.0.04.008 and later.

Step 12:
Create an administrator password when prompted and enter an optional security hint and then, click Next.

Once the Your extender is set up screen displays, your setup is complete.  To access the setup page of your range extender, make sure you are connected to its Wi-Fi name with the _Ext or _5GHz_Ext appended to the name.
