Configuring the Linksys Gigabit VPN Router with OpenVPN

What is OpenVPN and what is it used for?
 
OpenVPN is an application that implements Virtual Private Network (VPN) for creating secure point-to-point connections, which allows OpenVPN clients running on laptops, smartphones, and tablets to connect using two-factor authentication.
 
Before configuring the Linksys Gigabit VPN Router with OpenVPN, make sure the computer is connected to the LAN port.
 
Step 1:
Open a web browser and access the router's web-based setup page.  To learn how, click here.
 
Step 2:
Click on Configuration > OpenVPN.  On the Summary page, click the Config. button in the OPENVPN SERVER STATUS table.
  
Step 3:
Check the Enable OpenVPN Server box and select Password + Certificate as the Authentication Type.

 

Step 4:
Under Certificate Settings, three (3) parameters are required to be configured.  Enter those values and then click Save.
 
NOTE:  In this example, we used the values below:
  • Organization Name (O)*: linksys
  • Common Name (CN)*: OVPN_test
  • Valid Through*: 2023-01-01
 
Step 5:
Click OK when the Confirm dialog box appears.
 
Step 6:
Click on Configuration > OpenVPN.  On the Summary page, click the Add button to create an OpenVPN client account in the OPENVPN CLIENT STATUS table.
  
Step 7:
Under OpenVPN Client and CERTIFICATE SETTINGS, five (5) parameters are required to be configured.  Enter those values and then click, Save.
 
NOTE:  In this example, we used the values below:
  • OpenVPN Server:  WAN IP Address
  • Username:  sam
  • Password:  ………
  • Common Name (CN)* :  user1
  • Valid Through*:  2023-01-01
Step 8:
Click Export to export the OpenVPN client configuration (.ovpn) file for importing into client user’s OpenVPN Connect app.
 
NOTE:  Users will not do any configuration except for importing the .ovpn file created by the administrator.
