Setting up wireless MAC Filtering to permit users to connect to the wireless network on your Linksys ADSL Gateway

Wireless access can be filtered by using the Media Access Control (MAC) addresses of the wireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius.  You can either permit or prevent specific wireless computers to access your wireless network.

This article will guide you on how to setup Wireless MAC Filter to permit users to connect to your wireless network.  To learn how to prevent users from connecting to your wireless network, click here .

IMPORTANT:  Before setting up MAC filtering, you need to ensure the following:

  • Make sure you’ve identified all MAC addresses you wish to filter.  To learn how to find the MAC address of your wireless device, click here.
  • Make sure the wireless devices you want to allow are currently wirelessly connected to the gateway and are able to access the network.

To do this, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the ADSL gateway’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

NOTE:  If you are using a Mac computer to access the ADSL gateway's web-based setup page, click here

Step 2:
On the ADSL gateway’s web-based setup page, click Wireless Wireless Access.

NOTE The image may look different depending on the model number of the ADSL gateway.

Step 3:
Under the Wireless Network Access section, select Restrict Access and Permit only listed computers to access the wireless network.  Click Update Filter List afterwards.

NOTE:  In other ADSL gateway model numbers, Update Filter List is known as Edit MAC Addresses Access List.

NOTE This will allow wireless connectivity to the wireless computers whose MAC addresses appear on the MAC Filter List.

Step 4:
The MAC Address Filter List window will appear.  Enter the MAC address of the wireless computer that you want to allow access to your wireless network.

Step 5:
Click the Wireless Client MAC List and click Update Filter List to view the MAC addresses of all wireless computers connected to your wireless network. 

Step 6:
Check the MAC addresses listed and check Enable MAC Filter of the MAC address you want to allow access to your wireless network.

Step 7:
Click .

Step 8:
Click  on the MAC Address Filter List.

Step 9:
Click   on the Wireless Network Access page.
