- Maximizing the use of Linksys Wireless-N range extenders
What is a Linksys Wireless-N range extender/bridge?
The Linksys Wireless-N range extender/bridge allows you to repeat and extend the wireless signal coming from your access point or router. It provides Internet access in hard-to-reach areas through wired (through its Ethernet port) or wireless connections.
NOTE: The Linksys RE2000 v2 image is used as an example.
How can I maximize the use of the Wireless-N range extender?
The Linksys Wireless-N range extender is a very helpful device if you have a spacious house (perhaps with multiple floors). Maximizing the use of the range extender is essential to fully improve your wireless experience. Follow the instructions below to know how.
Use a Wireless-N router/access point
Since Linksys range extenders are Wireless-N devices, it would be best if your router or access point also runs on Wireless-N speed to fully utilize their capability. If your wireless source only supports Wireless-G, then the Linksys range extenders will just run on Wireless-G speed as well.
Use WPA2® wireless security
The Linksys Wireless-N range extender supports four (4) security modes: WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode, WPA2 Personal, WPA Personal, and WEP. For optimum Wireless-N performance, it is recommended to use WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode wireless security on your router and range extender.
Sometimes there are places at home where the wireless signal can be very weak and even after doing basic troubleshooting on the router, you still can’t get better connection.
The Linksys Wireless-N range extenders are designed for flexible placement. The wall outlet or desktop placement options allow you to optimize the location and position of your device to achieve best possible range and performance.
To improve your wireless connectivity, place the range extender in an area where you are getting strong wireless signal from the router. A strong wireless signal between your range extender and your router is needed to get better connectivity for computers and devices that will connect to the extender.
QUICK TIP: If the range extender is very far from the router, or if there are other devices nearby, like a cordless phone, microwave, or baby monitor, the signal may be interrupted. On the other hand, if it is too close to the router, the signal may not be available either.
Utilize the Ethernet port
After configuring your range extender, you can fully utilize it by connecting a desktop computer (or other wired device) to its Ethernet port. It works as a wireless bridge to instantly connect any wired Ethernet device to a wireless network.
Utilize the extended wireless network
Connect multiple wireless devices to your range extender. The Linksys Wireless-N range extenders act as an extension to your router or access point so you can connect several devices to it.
Once installed and configured, you should be able to maximize the use of your range extender. If you still have questions about Linksys Wireless-N range extenders, click on the links below for specific details about these devices:Getting to know the Linksys RE1000
