Setting up the Linksys RE9000 to Range Extender mode

The Linksys RE9000 Range Extender can be set up in two ways, through Range Extender mode or Access Point mode.  This article will show you the steps on how you can set it up on Range Extender mode.
 
Before you begin, make sure to have the following:
  • An existing dual-band wireless router or access point (preferred)
  • A computer or tablet with Wi-Fi capability
  • The existing Wi-Fi name and password of your wireless router
  • Your Linksys RE9000 should be on factory settings for initial setup (press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds)
 
Step 1:
Turn ON the Linksys RE9000 and wait for the light indicator to blink orange.

Step 2:
Using a Wi-Fi-capable device, look for Linksys Extender Setup in the list of available Wi-Fi and connect to it.

Step 3:
Once connected, launch a browser and enter "http://extender.linksys.com" in the Address bar then press [Enter].

Step 4:
On the page that opens, click on Start Setup.

NOTES: 
  • If the Linksys RE9000 has not detected a DHCP server, it defaults to its IP address, 192.168.1.1.
  • If you want to bypass the setup wizard, click on the Manual Setup link.  For more instructions, click here.
 
Step 5:
Select the Next button under the As a wireless range extender option.

Step 6:
By default, it will scan for an existing 5 GHz Wi-Fi and use it as a dedicated upstream connection for better performance.  Connect to your existing 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

NOTE:  If you only have a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, scroll down and select the Choose 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band... option instead.

Step 7:
Enter the Network Password in the field and then click Next.  The network password is also known as your Wi-Fi password.

Step 8:
On the window that opens, click Next.


NOTE:  Leaving Band Steering ON is the recommended setting.

However, if you want to create unique names for each of your range extender's radio band, uncheck Band Steering and enter your credentials in the fields provided then click Next.

Step 9:
Determine the Linksys RE9000's best placement through the Spot Finder.

Clicking the Find better location button will show you the on-screen instructions below.  Follow these steps until you see that the placement is Just right.  Otherwise, just click Back and select Connect anyway to proceed to the next step.

Step 10:
Change the admin password of your Linksys RE9000 then Save settings.
 
QUICK TIP:  An optional password hint will help you recall your admin password if you forget it.

Step 11:
Register your Linksys RE9000 by entering your Email Address in the field.  Click Next once done.
 
QUICK TIP:  If you want to bypass this step, click Skip.

Step 12:
Connect your wireless device to the new Wi-Fi.  The Next button will turn blue once the connection is successful.  Click Next.

NOTE: 
Unless you personalized the name of your Wi-Fi, you can easily identify it through the _Ext suffix.

Your Linksys RE9000 should now be set up.  You can click Print this to secure a copy of your settings.

At this point, you can now use http://extender.linksys.com to access the range extender’s web-based setup page.  For more instructions, click here.  When on Range Extender mode, the Linksys RE9000’s top header will read Next-Gen AC Wireless Range Extender.
